What is obedience?
A
- You follow a person of authority’s instructions.
- Gross defines obedience as ‘complying with the demands of an authority figure’

- To investigate the process of obedience, and investigate the power of a legitimate authority.

- 40 males, New York USA, 20-50 years old.

- Self-selecting sampling, through a newspaper article for a memory address and through direct mail

- Confederate: experimenter, 31 year old biology teacher, wore a grey lab coat
- Learner: 47 year old mild mannered, likeable accountant (victim)

What happened in the procedure?
A
- 2 participants entered the lab, at 300V the learner pounded on the wall, which repeated at 315V, after that, learner no longer responded to the learning task, if they wanted to stop, they were prodded.
- Prods: please continue, please go on, you have no choice you must go on.

- 65% went to 450V, lots of participants dropped out at 300V, white lab coat made them move from the autonomous state to the agentic state
