Chaney Flashcards
What did Chaney say about young people complying?
‘Young people struggle to comply as often as they should with doctor’s orders to take asthma medication. They struggle with deep breathing technique.’
What was the aim?
To show that the use of a ‘novel’ asthma spacer device, ‘the funhaler’, can provide positive reinforcement, which leads to improved adherence to medication by young adults.
What was the sample?
32 children (10 male, 22 female), aged 1.5-6 years old, from Australia, average duration of their asthma, 2.2 years.
Parents provided informed consent and participated through a questionnaire and phone interview.
What were the IV’s?
-Child used a ‘funhaler’
-Child used a standard
inhaler/small volume spacer
device
What is the DV?
Amount of adherence to the prescribed medication.
What research methods were used?
Field experiment, repeated measures design.
What was the procedure?
No significant difference in dosage, asked to use funhaler instead of PMDI, over 2 week period (longditudinal), matched questionnaires completed by parents after usage. Data collected from self-report related to how easy each device was to use, compliance of parents and children, treatment attitudes. Each parent called at random to find out if they had attempted to medicate their child the day before.
What were 2 findings?
60% more children took recommended 4 or more cycles.
Funhaler associated with improved parental + child compliance.
What was a conclusion?
Use of positive reinforcement (auditory/visual) increases compliance in young children.
