CONTEXT
millions of people moved to Asia, Africa, and Oceania due to:
loss of land and authority orders- many went to work on European-owned mines, plantations, etc.
INTERNAL MIGRATION
internal migration took place in Africa as many people went to European-owned farms and plantations
> > > permanent colonies set up in Algeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, South Africa
SQUATTERS AND NATIVE RESERVES
many people just stayed on the farms as “squatters” and others were sent to native reserves
> > very overpopulated and crowded
MINES
gold and diamond mines led to a large labor migration that included all of the African south- they were recruited on short term contracts and were prevented from setting up permanent settlements
> > many Chinese on Malaysian mines (produced 55% of the world’s tin)
ASIA
about 29 million Indians and 19 million Chinese migrated to the S Pacific, E and S Africa, and the Caribbean where there were huge sugarcane, rubber, tea, and tobacco plantations
women paid less than men, disease was common, death rates high, low wage
OTHER CHINESE MIGRATION
some Chinese moved to Manchuria to prevent Russian encroachment, many also moved to the Australian and California gold rushes
