When did the Latin American Revolutions start and end?
1808-1825
MAIN CAUSES
mainly influenced by preceding revolutions/creoles were offended by Spanish efforts to impose heavier taxes and tariffs/Napoleon’s invasions of Spain and Portugal in 1808 led to independence for various states in Latin America
SIMON BOLIVAR
main goal was to create a “United States of Latin America” but was unable to combine the states due to geographical barriers such as mountains; led a revolt in 1810 against Spanish forces in South America»_space; liberated many territories such as Venezuela, Peru, Panama, and Ecuador; also established Bolivia
HIDALGO-MORELOS REBELLION
creole landowners formed an army in Mexico City in an effort to liberate Mexico from Spanish rule
BRAZIL
Brazil won its independence through Dom Pedro, the king of Portugal’s (Pedro IV) son; he sent a letter to his father asking for independence and his father approved (no violence)
OUTCOMES
population decline from the violence of the revolution/new independent states that were free from Spanish rule
