What was the economic status before and after the revolution?
BEFORE: wealthiest colony at the time as it produced 40% of the world’s sugar and 50% of the world’s coffee
AFTER: many plantations were destroyed after the revolution and the land was divided into parcels, each parcel was owned by a “free slave”; all of the outcomes led to a decrease in export goods, while the population largely depended on self-sufficient agriculture
MAIN CAUSES
influence from the French Revolution and the brutality of the plantation owners led to ideas of revolution/conflict between the social classes
SOCIAL CLASSES BEFORE AND AFTER
BEFORE: 40,000 whites (petits blancs), 30,000 mixed raced (gens de coulour), and 500,000; whites were opposed to the idea of “rights of man” applying to everybody including slaves
» slaves revolted by burning 1000 plantations and killed many people
OUTCOMES
the economy was destroyed and it was the only successful slave rebellion; Saint Domingue was renamed Haiti and became an independent republic
