CONTEXT
most minority gained Western education through missionary and government schools; literacy allowed people better opportunities and a new identity, also an escape from forced labor, better paying jobs, social mobility and status, and chance for equality with whites
ASSIMILATION
many natives started to embrace European culture– language, culture, clothing, houses
CULTURAL DIVIDE
education led to a cultural divide between the educated and uneducated; colonial power saw themselves as modernizing the colonies and providing a better promise for a future
INDIA
reform societies led to improved status of women: no sati, lift on ban of widow remarriage, increased property rights, banned female infanticide and child marriage/arranged marriage
