- some people thought it was wrong in the eyes of God
- Not economically necessary for progress in the colonies (England and New England)
ABOLITION AROUND THE WORLD
Haitian Revolution, Decembrist Revolt, Great Jamaican Revolution, Latin America, USA
HAITI
Basically a result of the Haitian revolution as 500,000 slaves attacked 40,000 whites; only fully successful slave revolution as they were all liberated and become and independent nation
RUSSIA (DECEMBRIST REVOLT)
1825-1826; Decembrists were inspired by the American Revolution and revolted with the goal of abolishing serfdom and establishing a constitution
»> Ultimately did not work, but it did pave the way for later revolutions and eventually the end of serfdom in 1861 with the signing of the Emancipation Reform
GREAT JAMAICAN REVOLUTION
1831-1832; 60,000 slaves attacked plantations while 207 died in the uprising
» as a result, Britain abolished slavery in 1833
LATIN AMERICA
1826-1888; after the revolution there, most states were liberated for colonial rule; inspired by the British Abolitionist movement, most countries abolished slavery by 1886, and Brazil in 1888
USA (CIVIL WAR)
1861-1865; goal of abolishing slavery in the south, with about 600,000 casualties»_space;> abolished slavery in 1865 with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation
INDENTURED SERVITUDE
continued after the abolition of slavery with the same harsh conditions in places such as Hawaii, South Africa, Peru, Malaya, and the Caribbean; mainly used in mines and for construction
