Europeans in Motion Flashcards
MIGRATION AND CAUSES
internal migration: about 50% of families moved from rural to urban settings
20% emigration out of Europe between 1815 & 1939
> > > due to poverty, rapid population growth, demand for labor overseas, availability of land in USA and Australia, cheap transportation of railroads and steamships
OUTCOMES
Australia and New Zealand became settler colonies while the Pacific Islands were overwhelmed with Europeans- through conquest, acquisition of land, and disease
> > > Caused sharp racial divides in South Africa, Kenya, and Algeria; over 50% of migrants went to the USA for affordable land and industrial jobs; 20% went to Latin America and enjoyed economic and social advantages over colonial people
RUSSIA
10 million migrants to Siberia for land and greater freedom from landowners; also just did not want the Chinese to get Siberia (freed serfs)
> > > migrated by train (trans-Siberian railroad)
eventually led to the Europeanization of Siberia, relieved population pressures
