Levinson: the underlying pattern or design of a persons life at a given time. occupation and family centeral components. in middle adulthood give greater attention to previously neglected aspects. balance roles of paid worker, parent, spouse and caregiver
Life span theory
based on ongoing transitions between persons and environments that begins with the premise that development is life long

- development involves both gains and losses
- biological become more negative, cultural support more important
- increase in age, decrease in resources. must put major effort into managing resources
- there is still possibility for change
- experience may depend on cultural and historical contexts

tendency to be energetic, outgoing, friendly, lively, talkative and active

organized, reliable, responsible, hardworking, persistent and careful

conjunctive faith
fowler: look for balance in such polarities as independence and connection, many truths, service to others
