Microscopy Flashcards
Magnification?
Number of times an image is bigger than the object from which it was derived
Resolution?
The smallest distance that can be distinguished as two separate points in a microscope
Why are electron microscopes higher resolution than light microscopes?
Electrons have shorter wavelengths than visible light so distinguish objects that are smaller and closer together
What are the different planes of cutting a sample?
Transverse (vertical) and longitudinal (horizontal)
Advantages of electron microscopes
Higher resolution
higher magnification
disadvantages of electron microscopes
specimens must be dead
only back and white
expensive
required extensive training to use
advantages of light microscopes
Can observe live specimens
Can see colour images
Doesnt require training
Cheaper
disadvantages of light microscopes
lower resolution and magnification
