Microbiology Flashcards
what colour do gram negative bacteria stain
pi’N’k (‘N’egative)
what colour do gram positive bacteria stain
‘P’urple(‘P’ositive)
what different shapes can bacteria be
spiral, cocci(spheres) or bacilli(rods)
what do bacteria replicate by and under what conditions can they replicate
by binary fusion
in aerobic, anaerobic or microaerophilic conditions
what is an endotoxin and where is it found
it is a toxin found in gram negative bacterial cell wall
eNdo = Negative
what is an exotoxin and where is it found
toxin found in gram positive bacteria, produced inside cell and exported out of it
what does commensal mean
part of the normal flora
what does opportunistic pathogen mean
usually causes problems in immunocompromised patients
what is pathogenicity
ability of an organism to cause disease/infect host
what is virulence
degree of pathogenicity/severity of disease in host
what is the coagulase test used for
to determine between coagulase +ve staph aureus(appears golden) and coagulase -ve staphylococcus( eg staph epidermis)
what is partial haemolysis caused by
caused by enzymes denaturing haemoglobin inside RBCs
what is complete haemolysis caused by
caused by enzymes that lyse RBCs
describe alpha haemolysis
partial haemolysis
appears as greening of colonies
eg Strep viridans and Strep pneumonia
describe beta haemolysis
complete haemolysis
appears yellow and transparent
