Microbiology Flashcards
Kids
Rotavirus
All ages, faecal oral, “winter vomiting bug”, short intubation, lasts 2-4 days, highly infectious. Stool PCR. Hydration is key
Norovirus
Most common bacterial food poisoning, long intubation (5-14days), bloody diarrhoea, rarely outbreaks. Poultry. Erythromycin. Gram negative microaerophilic small curved bacilli. Stool culture.
Campylobacter
Outbreaks. Medium intubation. Diarrhoea, vomiting and fever. Different antigens. Poultry, meat, raw egg. Can cause Typhoid fever. Stool Culture.
Salmonella
Faecal oral, long intubation 1-7 days. Produces Verotoxin. Suspect in bloody diarrhoea. High risk of person to person spread. Can cause HUS. Most common cause of renal failure in children
Ecoli 0157
Colonises upper small bowel to produce diarrhoea and malabsorption. Infection spread by CYSTS in normal drinking water. Microscopy- examine stool for ova and cysts
Giardiasis
