Microbial Nutrition or Cell Nutrition Flashcards
Macronutrients
elements required in fairly large amounts
micronutrients
metals and organic compounds needed in very small amounts
What are the main macronutrients
C & N
What are the minimum nutritional requirements for bacteria
water, source of carbon, source of nitrogen, and some inorganic salts
phototrophs
use light as a primary energy source
chemotrophs
depend on oxidation-reduction reactions of inorganic or organic compounds for energy
Autotrophs
(self-feeders) use carbon dioxide
AKA lithotrophs- rock eating
Heterotrophs
(feeders on others) require an organic carbon source
AKA organotrophs
Heterotrophs can be further classified by their source of organic matter
1) Saprophytes- live on dead organic matter
2) parasites- derive nutrients from a living host
list the macronutrients
C, N, P, S, K, Mg, Ca, Na, Fe
what are the effects of temperature on microbial growth
microbes have minimum, optimum and maximum growth temperatures
acidophiles
organisms that grow best at low pH
helicobacter pylori, Thibacillus thiooxidans
Alkaliphiles
organisms that grow best at high pH
Vibrio cholera
Obligate Aerobes
strict
require O2 in order to grow
Obligate Anaerobes
cannot survive in O2
