Bacterial Growth Flashcards
Through what method do bacteria grow?
Binary Fusion
Generation time
time required for bacteria to give rise to 2 daughter cells under optimum conditions
When graphing large magnitude of bacteria populations what method is best to use and why?
Best to use logarithmic logging
List the Phases of Growth for bacteria
- Lag Phase
- Log or Exponential Phase
- Stationary Phase
- Phase of Decline
Lag Phase
Bacteria are metabolically active but not yet replicating. their is increase in cell size
Log Phase or Exponential Phase
s increase rapidly
exponential growth. cells divide rapidly
Stationary Phase
- Cell division stops due to depletion of nutrients and toxic product build up
- equilibrium between dying cells and newly formed cells
- growths reach plateau
Phase Decline Phase
Decrease in # of cells due to decrease in dying cells
autolytic enzymes
What is Batch Culture?
a closed system where cells are grown in specific environmental conditions, up to certain density in a tank or airlift fermentor
What is Continuous Culture?
A Chemostate is used. it functions by having a continuous flow of fresh medium while having old medium, which includes microbes, removed
- it is an open system
- keeps cells in specific phase
