Microbial Genetics Flashcards
What are plasmids?
Small molecules of DNA that replicate independently and not essential for normal metabolism, growth, or reproduction.
What is transformation?
Free DNA in the environment that is scooped up and integrated in host genome.
What is Transduction?
Bacteriophage containing donor DNA infects recipient cells, and donor DNA is integrated into genome.
What is conjugation?
Genetic transfer between two cell by cell to cell contact.
What is Insertion?
Transposons can insert in and out of genetic material.
What is demostrated with Griffiths experiment with rough and smooth strep pneumoniae cells in mice?
Transformation (uptake of genetic material from environment).
What happens between mating of F+ and F-? F+(Hfr) and F-?
F+ x F-= F+ and F+
F- x F+(Hfr)= F-
What is Fâ?
F plasmids loops out imprecisely and takes some of host DNA with it with little of the F factor.
WHat is the Ames test?
Testing for mutagenicity.
