Antibiotics Flashcards
What is a chemotherapeutic agent?
drugs that act against a disease.
What is an antimicrobial agent?
Drugs that treat infections
What is an antibiotic?
Antimicrobial agent produced by microorganisms that kill or inhibit other microbes.
What is a synthetic antibicrobial?
Chemically synthesized, not from a microorgansism.
What are the antibiotics that inhibit cell wall synthesis?
Penecillins, cephalosporins, vancomycin, penems.
What are the antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis (50s and 30s)?
50s: Eyrthromycin, clindamycin, chloramphenicol .
30s: Tetracyclines, aminoglycosides .
What are the antibiotics that inhibit nucleic acid synthesis?
Quinalones, rifampin, sulfa drugs, metronidazole, nucleosied analogs.
What are the antibiotics that inhibit metabolic pathways?
Sulfa drugs, trimethoprim, amantadine.
What are the antibotics that alter cell membrane permeability?
Nystatin, amphotericin B, polymyxins.
What are some side effects of taking anitbiotics?
Some may be toxic.
Allergy reactions can occur.
Disruption of normal microbiota.
What are the 2 ways bacteria gain resistance?
- New mutations
2. Acquisition of R-plasmids via transformation, transduction, and conjugation.
What are the methods of antibiotic resistance?
- Inactivation of drug (cleavage, phosphorylation)
- Altered uptake (permeability, efflux pumps)
- Modification of structural target of drug
- Altered metabolic pathway
