Microbial diseases Flashcards
What are the two main categories that microbial diseases are distuingished by and the subcategories within them
Infectious- Chronic and acute
Aquired (but not infectious)-Chronic
Lepracy is what kind of disease?
Infectious chronic
Meningitis is what kind of disease?
Infectious acute
unulcerated collitis is what kind of disease?
Acquired but not infectious chronic
What are the routes of infection?
-Gastrointestinal tract
-Respiratory tract
-Wounds or abrasions in mucous membranes or skin
-Genitourinary tract
Parenteral (through bloodstream, insect bites, stab wounds…)
-Vertical transmission
What is one of our largest barriers for infection?
Skin- Keratin, sebum, langerham cells
How is the mucous membrane of the intestine a good barrier to infection?
- Destroys pathogens
- Cilia remove microbes from lungs
How do tight junctions work?
Intercollated series of glycoproteins, producing a barrier to pathogens
Gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) is critical for what?
Specialised M cells that take microbes and kill them within tonsils, adenoids and payer patches
What are some chemical barriers to infection?
- Defensins-cationic peptides
- 29-47 amino acids
- Destroy microbes cytoplasmic membrane
- Ppetide binds negatively charged oouter membrane
- Then oulled into the cytoplasmic membrane
