Metabolic Rate Flashcards
What is the metabolic rate?
The quantity of energy consumed by organism per unit.
How can the metabolic rate be measured?
- volume of oxygen consumed
- volume of carbon dioxide produced
- heat produced
What equipment can be used to measure the metabolic rate?
- respirometer
- calorimeter
- CO2 probe
- O2 probe
Who has higher metabolic rates?
Birds and mammals over reptiles, amphibians, and fish.
What do birds and mammals require because of their higher metabolic rate?
Different circulatory systems as they require more efficient delivery of oxygen to their cells.
What is the circulatory system composed of?
- heart
- blood vessels
- blood
What circulatory system do birds and mammals have?
A complete double circulatory system:
- 2 atria
- 2 ventricles
Blood does not mix.
What circulatory system do amphibians and reptiles have?
An incomplete double circulatory system:
- 2 atria
- 1 ventricle
Blood mixes.
What circulatory system do fish have?
A single circulatory system:
- 1 atrium
- 1 ventricle
Blood mixes.
What does a complete circulatory system mean?
There is no mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. Blood can also be pumped at a higher pressure. More efficient delivery of oxygen to cells.
