Crop Protection Flashcards
What is a monoculture?
Production of a single plant species.
Characteristics of annual weeds?
- rapid growth
- short lifecycle
- large number of seeds
- long-term viability of seeds
Characteristics of perennial weeds?
- storage organs
- vegetative reproduction
What are common invertebrate pests?
- molluscs - snails and slugs
- nematodes - worms and parasites
- herbivorous insects - aphids
What can invertebrate pests carry?
Diseases.
Two methods of pest control?
- cultural
- chemical
What is cultural control?
Preventative control like;
- ploughing
- sowing
- removal of weeds at correct times
- removal of alternative hosts
- destruction of crop residue
- cover crop
- crop rotation
What is chemical control?
- herbicides
- fungicides
- molluscicides
- nematicides
What are the two types of herbicides?
- selective
- systemic
How do selective herbicides work?
Mimic plant growth hormones exhausting weed’s food supply and dying.
How do systemic herbicides work?
Enter the vascular system and transported to all parts of the weed including organs and roots.
What is biomagnification?
An increase in the concentration of a chemical moving between the trophic levels of a food chain.
What is bioaccumulation?
Persistence of a chemical creating a build-up in an organism.
What is there also?
Biological control
