MES Flashcards
Mutation
Any change in DNA that may result in a new phenotype
Explain where a germ cell Mutation occurs
Occurs in gametes
Does germ cell mutation affect organisms or offspring
Doesn’t affect organism but is passed on to offspring
Understand that germ cell mutations provide the variation on which natural selection acts
Understand that germ cell mutations provide the variation on which natural selection acts
Explain where a Somatic Cell Mutation occurs
Body cell
Does a somatic cell mutation affects the organism or the offspring
Passed to daughter cells by mitosis
4 types of chromosomal mutations
Deletion, inversion, translation, non-disjunction
Deletion mutations
A piece of chromosome is deleted
Inversion mutation
A section of chromosome breaks off and reattaches in the opposite direction
Translocation mutation
A section of chromosome breaks off and attaches to another
Nondisjunction
One chromosome sears fail to separate during Meiosis
Nondisjunction – monosomy
When a zygote has only one chromosome of a pair
Nondisjunction – trisomy
When is zygote has three of a particular chromosome
Gene mutations
May involve a single nitrogen base or a larger settlement
List the two types of a gene mutation
Point mutation and frame shift mutation
