Little Albert Study
Supports how phobias are developed through classical conditioning. Albert developed a fear of rabbits when an iron bar was struck behind him when he was exposed to the rabbit, the fear of the noise of the bar was associated with the presence of the rabbit, thus forming the phobia.
Freud
Phobias are a defence against the anxiety experienced when unpleasant impulses have been repressed. The repressed feelings are displaced onto an object or situation with which they are associated with.
McGrath
Successful treatment of a nine year olds phobia towards noises with the use of systematic desensitisation.
Beck
Theorised that once depressed patients will select information from their environment which will confirm their negative thoughts. Where one negative event which is small, will override the whole positive day.
He also stated there is a positive relationship between the severity of ones negative thoughts and the severity of the depressive symptoms.
Nardo
Those who had a negative experience with dogs that lead to a phobia, believed that the negative experience would happen again, supporting catastrophication.
