menstrual cycle Flashcards
What are the phase of the menstrual cycle?
1) Menses - first five days
2) proliferative phase or follicular (ovary)
3) Ovulation
4) Luteal (ovary) or secretory phase
describe the menses stage of menstruation
Menses
First five days is the menstrual flow
What causes menstrual flow?
estrogene and progesterone withdrawal causes vasoconstriction causing the uterual lining to disintegrate and slough away
describe the follicular (ovary) or proliferative phase of menstruation.
FSH stimulates the maturation of the follicle which secretes estrogen. estrogen cause the uterine lining to thicken (proliferate)
Describe ovulation in the menstrual cycle?
at 14 days high concentration of estrogen is followed by LH surge which stimulates ovulation
Describe the Luteal phase of menstruation cycle
Also called the secretory phase. the follicular cell disintegrates into the corpus luteum. which secretes progesterone and estrogen
what does progesterone affect in the luteal cycle?
Progesterone cause the uterine lining to become more vascular and glandular. this is the cause of the body temp rising immediately after ovulation
What doe estrogen affect in the luteal phase?
It further stimulates uterine wall development and along with progesterone inhibits the secretion of LH and FSH
What happens if the egg is fertilized?
The embryo woulD produce hCG hormone which wouls stimulate the corpus luteum to continue to produce estrogen and progesterone.
What happens if the egg isnt fertilized?
The corpus luteum would disintergrate and estrogen and progesterone would withdraw. the cycle would restart.
