Causes of MEN
A
- genetic mutation
• MEN 1 - tumour supressor gene on Chr 11
- MEN type 1 tumor caused
• RET - protoncogene which becomes oncogene
- MEN type 2A and 2B caused

MEN type 1 tumor
A
1. Parathyroid • inc parathyroid hormone release • excess Ca -> Calcium kidney stones 2. Pancreatic i. Gastrinoma -> Gastrin -> HCL -> peptic ulcers ii. Insulinoma -> Hypoglycaemia iii. Glucagonoma -> hyperglycemia 3. Pituitary Adenoma - non cancernous tumors i. Prolactinoma -> Galctorrhea -> Gynecomastia in men ii. GH excess -> Gigantism in children or Acromegaly in adults

MEN type 2A
A
- Thyroid medullary Cancer
- develops in everyone with disease
- Cancer of C cells which produce calcitonin - Adrenal glands - Phepchryomocytoma
- excess epinephrine and norepinephrine produces
- high bp, sweating - Parathyroid adenoma

A
• Thyroid medullary cancer
• Pheochromocytoma
• Multiple neuromas
- tumors of nerve tissue in the skin and mouth

Type 1 MEN symptoms
A
Pituitary adenoma may; press on brain tissue •head aches press on optic nerve • vision problems

Type 2A and Type 2B symptoms
A
- Thyroid tumor - press near by organs in the neck causing
• Hoarseness, coughing, trouble swallowing
