Hyperaldosteronism Flashcards
1
Q
Hyperaldosteronism
A
Endocrine disorder where adrenal gland produces above normal levels of aldosterone
2
Q
Aldosteropn phys
A
- Aldosterone is made by the adrenal medulla most inner layer called zona glomerulosa
- Released in response to renin and bind to distal convulated tubule of the nephron
- Stimulate Na/K pump to work harder so more Na+ enters the blood and so water follows
- This increases blood volume and blood pressure
3
Q
Function os Aldoesterone ( angiotensin and renin too)
A
- Decrease potassium levels
- Increase sodium levels
- Increase blood volume and blood pressure
4
Q
Causes of hyperaldosterone
( PRIMARY CAUSES)
( low renin/ high aldosterone)
A
- Idiopathic hyperaldosteronism - zoma glomerulosa has an increase in aldosterone secreting cells
- Conn syndrome - tumor secretes too much aldosterone
- Familial Hyperaldosteronism - genetic, zona glomerular cells make aldosterone inappro
5
Q
Secondary causes of hyperaldosteronism
high aldosterone/ high level of renin
A
- Chronic increase in blood pressure ( CHF/Cirrhosis) –Excess aldosterone production as a result of excess renin levels
6
Q
Clincial feat of hyperaldosteronism
A
- Hypokalemia
- Hypernatremia - high Na in the blood means more water so higher bp
- Hypertension
- Metabolic alkalosis- loss of proton in blood
7
Q
Symtpoms of hyperaldosteronism
A
Hypokalemia - constipation, weakness, heart arrythmia
Hypertension - headaches and flushing
