Hypermagnesemia/Hypomagnesemia Flashcards
1
Q
Hypermagnesemia
A
Magnesium levels in the blood are too high (greater than 4 mEg/L)
2
Q
Symtoms
A
- Mg inhibits Calcium influx
-> affects impulse formation, neurotransmitter release,
•inhibits musclecontraction • - Inhibits release of parathyroid hormone -> calcium levels fall -> hypocalcaemia
- Alter electrical potential across cardiac cell membrane -> cardiac arrythmia eg. heart block // asystole
3
Q
Treatment
A
- Reduce intake
- Calcium gluconate injection
- Furosemide - promotes Mg excretion
- Haemodialysis
4
Q
Hypomagnessemia
A
Lower magnesium levels in the blood below 1 mg in blood
• also assoc with hypomagnesemia
5
Q
Diagnosis
A
- Measure Mg in blood
* 24 hour urine collection
6
Q
Treatment
A
- Low intake -> oral supplements
* Magnesium sulphate admin intravenously/intramuscularly
