Hypokalaemia and Hyperkalaemia Flashcards
1
Q
Hypokalaemia
A
Very low levels of potassium in the blood
2
Q
Causes of hypokalaemia
A
- decreased oral intake - rare and often compensated for by the kidneys
- increased cellular uptake - occurs in alkalosis//hypothermia//B2 agonist use
- increased loss of K+ - diarrhoea, vomitting, diuretics, hyperaldosteronism
3
Q
Symptoms of hypokalaemia
A
- muscle weakness/cramps
- Paraesthesia - abnormal tingling sensation
- Cardiac arrythmias
4
Q
Hyperkalemia
A
- high potassium levels >5 mnol
* increased cell release or decreased excretion
5
Q
Treatment of hypokalaemia
A
- treatment with oral/IV potassium
- Hypomagnesium often coexists
6
Q
Symptoms of hyperkalaemia
A
- muscular weakness
* cardiac weakness
