Memory models Flashcards
What are the 3 stages of the MSM?
Short term sensory memory, Short term memory, Long term memory
What is the capacity of each store?
STSS - Limitless
STM - 5-9 items
LTM - Unlimited
What is the duration of each store?
STSS - up to 1 second
STM - up to 30 seconds
LTM - Indefinite
Describe selective attention?
Relevant information is filtered from the STSS to the STM.
Irrelevant information is forgotten
Describe the rehearsal loop
Information is more likely to be passed to the LTM if skills are rehearsed and repeated in order to form motor programmes
Identify strategies to help a performer retain more information
Chunking, rehearsal, avoiding overload, giving meaning
Evaluate the MSM
+ Simple to understand
+ Explains how large amounts of information is filtered
- Hasn’t been proven
- Doesn’t account for individual differences
What are the 3 stages of Craik and Lockhart’s processing model?
Structural, phonetic, Semantic
Describe the 3 stages of C&L processing model
Structural - Paying attention to what the information looks like
Phonetic - Processing what the information sounds like
Semantic - What the meaning of the information is
What factors affect the memory according to the processing model theory?
How much consideration is given to the information
If the information has meaning
If the information is understood
The deeper the information is processed the more likely it will be remembered
Evaluated the Processing model (C&L)
+ Proven that if the information has meaning, a better understanding and longer memory trace
- Not quantifiable of how deep something is understood
