Explain vealeys model of sports confidence (6 marks)
Sporting context – is the current sports situation that is in front of us
- Trait sports confidence - Innate level of self-belief an individual has in sport
- Competitive orientation – is the competitiveness to take on set goals and take risks
- State sports confidence - Learned level of self-belief in a specific sporting situation
- State sports confidence is influenced by the level of traits sports confidence and competitive orientation that someone has
- The higher trait sports confidence and competitive orientation that someone has, the more confident a performer will be in a specific sporting situation
- The level of state sports confidence will impact the behaviour that is shown to the situation
- High state sports confidence will result in a skilful and successful performance
- Low state sports confidence will result in a low quality performance
Explain Bandura’s model of self-efficacy?
- Performance accomplishments – past experiences will determine the self efficacy of a performer, if positive past experiences good self-efficacy, if negative past experiences poor self-efficacy
- Vicarious experience – seeing others around you succeed or fail will impact your self efficacy, particularly if that person you are around is the same ability, age as you etc.
- Verbal persuasion – what is spoken to the person to determine their self-efficacy such as, has the performer received positive feedback to make them confident, has a significant other encouraged them and been positive
- Emotional arousal – If a performer has good techniques to control arousal they will have better self-efficacy, if a performer believes that some arousal will benefit their performance rather than hinder it they will have better self-efficacy
- Behavioural response – the 4 factors will determine what response is given to situations, low self-efficacy will lead to a response where the performer may not try as they wont be very good which leads to a poor performance, high self-efficacy will result in large effort and a skilful performance
- The more components that are positive, the better the chance of good self-efficacy and vice versa
