Memory Lymphocytes and immunistaion Flashcards
Explain how an immune response works
a pathogen enters the body it has an antigen on the surface of it -unique/specific chemical molecules
the foreign antigen detected by white blood cell
a protein is produced by lymphocytes(white blood cell)called antibody, has complimentary shape to the specific antigen allows molecules to lock together to destroy or kill them by doing a chemical reaction
B-memory cells remember the specific antigen and antibodies made to do quicker response if it enters again.
explain difference between 1st response and 2nd response
stronger faster no symptoms shown as more cells recognise it due to memory lymphocytes remain body for longtime
what is immunisation/vaccinating?
injecting dead or inactive pathogens into body .Still carry antigens harmless but body still produces antibodies to destroy them.
Memory lymphocytes made -to cause a 2nd i response.
What are the 2 pros and cons of Immunisation?
- big outbreaks of diseases prevented if large %of population immunised.even if some not herd immunity
- some diseases like smallpox virtually wiped out
- doesn’t always work -no immunity
- bad reaction swelling fever or seizure.rare.
