MEMORY- cognitive interviews Flashcards
what are cognitive interviews
-way of using findings from cognitive psychology to improve how police interviews prompt memories
standard vs cognitive interviews (6)
STANDARD
-brief q’s
-closed questions
-interruptions
COGNITIVE
-actively listening
-minimal distractions
-open questions
what is the 1st technique (3)
-report everything
-include every detail even if it seems irrelevant
-trivial details may be important+trigger other memories
what is the 2nd technique (4)
-reinstate the context
-imagine original crime scene
-imagine environment and emotions
-related to context depends forgetting
what is the 3rd technique (4)
-reverse the order
-recall events in different orders
-prevents reporting expectations of how the event happened
-prevents dishonesty- harder to produce untruthful account if order changes
what is the 4th technique (4)
-change perspective
-eg. from perpetrator/other witnesses
-disrupts effects of expectations and schema on recall
-the schema you have for a particular setting generates expectations of what would’ve happened. The schema is recalled, not the actual events
