ATTACHMENT- animal studies Flashcards
what is imprinting
offspring follow and forms and attachment to the first large moving object they see after birth
what is the critical period for goslings (2)
4-25 hours after hatching
-if imprinting doesnt occur they dont attach themselves to a mother figure
lorenz- procedure (4)
-divided goose eggs to 2 batches
-control group natural hatched by mother- behaviour was recorded
-experimental group were hatched in an incubator- lorenz made sure he was the first large moving object the goslings saw
-mixed all goslings in a box and observed behaviour
lorenz- findings (2)
-control group: followed mother after being mixed in a box
-experimental group: followed lorenz after being mixed in a box- showed no attachment to mother
what did harlow study
the extent to which comfort and food influences attachment behaviour in baby rhesus monkeys
harlow- procedure (5)
-tested idea that a soft object servers some functions of mothers
-reared 16 baby monkeys with 2 wire model mothers
-one condition was milk dispensed by the plain-wire mother model
-one condition was a cloth covered wire mother model
-scared the baby monkeys with a machine and observed behaviour
harlow- findings (2)
-baby monkeys cuddled cloth covered mother- sought comfort in it when scared
-contact comfort more important than food for monkeys
what is the critical period for monkeys (2)
-90 days
-if attachment isnt formed, it is impossible to do so and the damage by early deprivation is irreversible
