memory Flashcards
what is learning?
acquisition of information and there is an adaptive change in the CNS and the information is stored
memory ?
ability to recall information that has been stored.
the outcomes of the working memory ?
working memory can either fade away or be consolidated to the long term memory. A stimuli is applied and the response is produced.
from the long term memory what can be done to the information ?
it can be retrieved to the working memory.
characteristics of the working memory ?
current and temporary information , it lasts seconds to minutes and there is a limited capacity.
factors affecting working memory ?
attention , language / visual associations. As well as , relevant data retrieval from the long term memory
characteristics of long term memory ?
stores information that is not currently in our attention , it last for hours , days and even years
influenced by ?
attention and motivation
what’s the 2 types of long term memory ?
- Procedural – this is how to do something
* Declarative – this is facts and events
is there a limit to the LTM ?
nope
what part’s of the brain are associated with memory ?
cerebral cortex and hippocampus
explain Henry Molaision ?
underwent hippocampi and amygdala surgery to relieve his epileptic fits. The surgery cured his epilepsy and there was no change in his intellect and personality. However , he suffered from retrograde amnesia as he lost his memories from 1 – 2 before the surgery but could remember older memories. He also suffered from anterograde amnesia as he couldn’t form new long term memories.
in term’s of brain features what is Alzehiemer’s ?
when cell death occurs in the cortex and hippocampus , there is a large decrease in the cholinergic neurons in the cortex , especially acetylcholine
long term potentiation?
This is when there is an increase in effectiveness of neurotransmission. It is initiated by high frequency stimulation and Long-lasting.
why does it occur ?
due to an increase in the glutamate neurotransmitter and the increase in post synaptic sensitivity to glutamate.
