Meiosis Flashcards
Chromosomal Abnormalities are
The leading cause of miscarriage
Chromosomal index
P-arm/ length of chromosome
Meiosis 1
Basically normal cell replication from one cell into two cells
Meiosis 2
2 cells go from diploid to 4 haploid as they do not replicate DNA before splitting
Nondisjunction of meiosis 1
Creates a trisomic cell and a monosomic cell (IN EGG)
Leads to 2 disomic gametes and 2 monosomic gametes
Monosomy is only viable on chromosome X
Nondisjunction meiosis 2
Creates 1 disomic gamete and 1 nullisomic gamete
Usually happens in SPERM, nd during meiosis 1 happens in EGG
Meiosis in males
1 cell to 4 spermatids
Meiosis 1 in females
Begins and ends before birth
Only 20% of original oova survive
Completed with extrusion of 1st polar body (diploid)
Meiosis 2 in females
Completion happens with exclusion of 2nd polar body(haploid)
One sister chromatid remains in the egg cell
Did nondisjunction occur in M1 or M2?
Look at the centromeres
Heterozygous means M1
Homozygous means M2
