Meglitinides Flashcards
Name the two drugs and the Meglinitides drug class
Repaglinide (prandin)
Nateglinide (starlix)
What is the brand name of repaglinide
Prandin
What is the brand name of nateglinide
Starlix
What is the mechanism of action for the meg group
Increase insulin secretion from the pancreas
Would you want to combine a sulfonylurea and a meg
No, there is no benefit and Meg should not be used in patients who previously experienced primary or secondary failure of a sulfonylurea
Who is the primary candidate for repaglinide
Type 2 diabetic without dyslipidemia with or without renal failure normal weight fasting plasma glucose greater than 20 points above the target number
Who was the primary candidate for a nateglinide medication
Type 2 diabetic with capacity for insulin production is hyperglycemia is not adequately controlled by nutrition or physical activity and it was not been treated long term with other oral glucose lowering agents
What is the dose for prandin

120 is the initial and maintenance dose. 60 for those with controlled a1c
How does meg work
Rapid acting oral and insulin ssecretagoguee
that stimulates insulin secretion when needed postprandially and then allows insulin concentrations to return to normal
Are meglinitides used for pregnancy
No, and not for breastfeeding or children
Caution for taking prandin
Imperative how to function, elderly, debilitated, malnourished, adrenal pituitary hepatic insufficiency, hypoglycemia effects
