Medications Flashcards
What are the main monoamines?
Serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine
Antipsychotics
These were the first drugs used for psychopathology. They wre usually used to treat positive symptoms of schizophrenia, such as dellusions and hallucinatons, by blocking dopamine receptors adn inhibiting dopamine production.
What are some examples of anipsychotics?
Holoperidol (Haldol)
chlorpromazine (Thorazine)
Antimanics
Drugs of choice to manage bipolar disorder. They inhibit monoamines such as norepinephrine and serotonin, based on the theory that mania results from excessive monoamines.
Example: Lithium
Antidepressants
Used to reduce depressive symptoms by taking the opposite action of antimanics. The theory is that abnormally low levels of monamines cause depression. These drugs act to increase the production and transmission of various monoamines
Examples
Tricyclics (Elavil)
MAOIs (Nardil)
SSRIs (prozac, zoloft, Paxil)
Antiolytics
Used to reduce anxiety or to induce sleep, usually by increasing the effectivenes sof GABA ( since it is an inhibitory neurotransmitter). They also have hgih potential for causing habituation and addiction. For examples:
Barbiutates
Benzodiazepines
Diazepam (valium)
alprazolam (Xanax)
Antabuse
Is a drug that changes the metabolism of alcohol, resulting in severe nausea and vomiting when combined with alcohol; it can be used as countercondition alcoholics
