Which drugs are found in a dental practice for emergency use?
Adrenaline B2 bronchodilator GTN spray Dispersible aspirin Glucose (quick acting) Glucagon Midazolam oromucosal solution
When should adrenaline be used?
In cases of anaphylaxis
When should a salbutamol inhaler be used?
In cases of asthma attack
When should GTN spray be used?
Angina or suspected heart attack
When should dispensable aspirin be used?
Suspected heart attack
When should quick acting glucose be used?
Hypoglycaemia - patient cooperative and able to swallow safely
When should glucagon be used?
Hypoglycaemia - patient unable to swallow safely eg - unconscious
When should midazolam be used?
Prolonged convulsive seizures (>5 minutes) or repeated (>3 in an hour)
What is the adult dose of adrenaline?
500 micrograms
May be repeated at 5 minute intervals
What is the adult dose for salbutamol?
2 actuations inhaled
Use space device if necessary
Repeat doses may be necessary
What is the dose and route of GTN spray?
2 actuations sublingually
May be repeated
What is the dose of dispensable aspirin?
300mg chewed
What is the dose of quick acting glucose?
15-20g quick acting glucose eg - 1.5-2 tubes of Glucogel or 4-5 Glucotabs
What is the adult dose and route for glucagon?
1mg IM
What is the adult dose and route of midazolam?
Midazolam oromucosal solution can be given by the buccal route in adults as a single dose of 10mg
