What should be checked before assembling the syringe?
The patient’s medical history and the injection site
How should an LA syringe be opened?
Tear back the sterile seal of the cartridge, check the use by date and insert gold end into the syringe
What happens after opening the LA syringe?
Grip and retract plunger handle to cover silicone washer, then roll plunger onto the cartridge
What happens to the protective sheath to ensure safety?
Slide the protective sheath back towards the handle until it clicks
Make sure there is no gap and plunger is locket to syringe handle
What should be done after the protective sheath is pulled back?
Remove the needle cap and discard it - the needle is ready for use
What technique should be used when inserting LA?
Passive aspiration and active activation
How should an LA cartridge be changed?
Slide sheath up to 1st holding position, remove and change
What should be done after use of an LA syringe?
When used, lock needle in 2nd holding position - do not try and unlock from this position
What happens to each part of the LA syringe after use?
Fully retract and peel plunger which can be sterilised. Needle in sharps box and cartridge in glass box
What should be checked before administering local anaesthetic?
Check the patients medical history
Identify the injection site
Applied topical anaesthetic
Assemble the syringe correctly and tested it before approaching the patient
Disposed of all equipment and material appropriately after use
