Med-surg ATI: Level up Flashcards
What is a Cerebral Angiogram
Allows for visualization of cerebral blood vessels. A catheter is placed into an artery (usually groin), threaded up blood vessels in the brain, dye is injected, x-rays taken
Cerebral angiogram teaching
NPO 4-6 hours prior, assess for allergy to iodine or shellfish, assess kidney function.
After the procedure check insertion site for bleeding and check distal extremity
Pre - procedure teaching for EEG
wash hair prior to procedure, arrive sleep deprived, no NPO is needed, avoid stimulants and sedatives 12-24 hours prior, flashing lights may be used, may be instructed to hyperventilate
Meningitis prevention
immunizations help prevent bacterial meningitis, Hib given to infants, MCV4 given to college students
Meningitis symptoms
headache. nuchal rigidity, photophobia, nausea, vomiting, positive Kernig’s and Brudzinski’s sign, fever, altered LOC, tachycardia, seizures
bacteria will have cloudy, CSF, decreased glucose content
Myasthenia gravis nursing care
tape eyes shut at night, maintain airway, provide small high calorie meals, administer lubricating eye drops
migraine headaches s/s
photophobia, nausea/vomiting, unilateral pain, can happen with aura, pain persists for 4-72 hours
Tension pneumothorax
tracheal deviation, absent breath sounds on affected side, respiratory distress, asymmetry of chest
Patient teaching for anticoagulants
frequent blood draws required to monitor PT/INR (2-3), maintain consistent intake of K, smoking cessation, no electric shaver
nursing care during arterial line insertion
level transducer with phelobstatic access (4th intercostal, midaxillary line), confirm with x-ray
Cardiac tamponade
accumulation of fluid in pericardial sac
s/s: hypotension, muffled heart sounds, JVD, paradoxical pulse
Nursing care PICC line
assess site every 8 hours, use 10 mL syringe to flush line w 0.9% saline
blood draws: withdrawal 10 mL blood and discard then draw sample
