Mating Systems Flashcards
What are the 4 mating systems?
Polygamy
Monogamy
Non- associative
Courtship
What is polygamy?
Is typical of one- male multi female groups and can be found in species like: gorilla, spotted hyena, red deer.
What is monogamy?
Is a pair bond between two adult animals of the same species- typically of the opposite sex.
- may cohabitate in an area or territory for some duration of time, and in some cases may copulate and reproduce with only each other.
- may be short term, lasting one to a few seasons or long term, lasting many seasons and lifelong.
2 categories:
Social and genetic monogamy.
What is non- associative?
Also known as dissociative mating, negative assortative mating or heterogamy, is a mating pattern in which individuals which dissimilar phenotypes mate with one another more frequently than would be expected under random mating.
What is courtship?
Behaviour that results in mating and eventual reproduction. Courtship may involve a small number of chemical, visual or auditory stimuli; or it may be highly complex series of acts by two or more individuals, using several modes of communication.
