Communication Methods Flashcards
What are the different methods of communication?
Vision (body language, facial expressions)
Hearing (vocalisations and other sounds)
Chemical (smell, pheromones, taste)
Touch (e.g. allogrooming)
What is visual communication?
Visual communication is when an animal uses its body language and facial expressions to express itself. This can be for many reasons including courtship, defensive strategies, dominance and many more.
What is auditory communication?
Auditory communication is when animals use sound and noises to communicate, this can be vocalisation, sounds produced by various body parts and creating sound using the surrounding environment.
What is chemical communication?
Chemical communication is when animals use their own bodily chemicals to send messages. This can be done via smell, pheromones and taste, chemical communication is common in all animals but invertebrates have mastered this method of communication.
What is tactical communication?
Tactile communication is when animals use touch to communicate with one another. This can be for bonding, mating, aggression and many more reasons.
What is interspecific communication?
Interspecific Communication is between different species of animals, microorganisms and in some cases plants.
What is intraspecific communication?
Intraspecific competition is an interaction and communication in population ecology, whereby members of the same species communicate with one another and compete for limited resources.
