Math Flashcards
Cause + effect
A change in x produces a change in y
Example- on a clear sunny day in the afternoon in the summer the higher the temperature the quicker you will get burnt
Reverse chase and effect relationship
The dependent and independent variables are reversed in the process of establishing causality
Example- this is a positive correlation between the amount of coffee consumed by adults ( independent ) vs their v levels of anxiety (dependent)
Accidental realtionship
Correlation exists without any casual realtionship between variables
Examples- there’s a positive correlation between the number of females studying science and the amount of game shows in tv
Presumes relationship
A correlation does not seem to be accidental even though cause and effect realtionship or common cause factor is apparent
Example - there’s a positive correlation between a persons fitness level of adventure movies they watch
Common cause relationships
An external variable causes two variables to change in the same way
Examples- a graph if ice cream sales vs tomato sales in the summer
