Maternal Newborn Lab Flashcards
What is true of the breasts of the bubbleheat assessment
Breast are usually soft during the 1st two days after delivery.
They become substantially larger and firmer about the 3rd postpartum day. This congestion of fluid is known as engorgement caused by sudden hormones changes after delivery
What is true of the uterus in the bubble heat assessment
In the first 24 hours after birth, the uterus should be midline and near the umbilicus and feel firm. Expect the uterus to be large in woman who has several pregnancies or large babies.
The umbilicus descends below the umbilicus about a cm each day after delivery. ( so of the 3rd postpartum day it should be 2 cm below the umbilicus.)
How should the uterus feel on a postpartum woman during assessment
The top of the uterus also called the fundus should remain very firm. If it becomes soft, the uterine muscles aren’t contracting properly or the uterus has retained placental fragments. This sign can indicate hemmorhage. If the uterus is soft, immediate fundal massage is indicated.
When will the uterus no longer be felt?
Approx 10 days to 2 weeks the uterus will tuck behind the bone at the symphysis pubis and can no longer be felt
What is lochia in the bubble heat assessment
The first 3 days a woman gives birth, her lochia ( vaginal discharge) is dark red, and may contain a few small clots. This is called lochia rubra.
Fro the 4th through the 10th day, she has lochia serous, which is thinner and pink to brown. Fro the 10th day to the 3rd week after birth lochia alba, a yellowish white discharge is present; this discharge may continue for up to 6 weeks.
