Breast pain and tenderness (unilateral)

Local warmth and inflammation
Nipple discharfe
Fever
Conservative management of mastitis
When non bacterial
Breastfeeding, expressing milk and breast massage
Heat packs, warm showers and simple analgesia
When should antibiotics started in mastitis
Conservative not effective
Infection is suspected
What is first line for mastitis?
Flucloxacillin
Ertythromycin if allergic to penicillin
What can be used for sus candidal mastitis
Fluconazole
Should women continue breastfeeding with mastitis
Yes even if infection syspected
Wont harm baby and will help mastitis
When is surgical incision and draingage needed for mastitis
When turns into a breast absess
When does candidal infection of the nipple often occur
After a course of antibiotics - recurrent mastisis
What is recurrent mastitis and what is it ass with
Causes cracked skin on nupple - entrance for infection
Ass with oral thrush and candidal nappy rash in infant
How does candidal infection of the nipple present
Sore nipples bilaterally, esp after feeding
Nipple tenderness and itching
Cracked, flaky or shiny areola
Symptoms in the baby such as white patches in mouth and on tongue or candidal nappy rash
