Maslow: Holistic-Dynamic Theory Flashcards
Assumes that the whole person is constantly being motivated by one need or another and that people have the potential to grow toward psychological health.
Holistic-dynamic theory
This concept assumes that lower level needs must be satisfied or at least relatively satisfied before higher level needs become motivators.
Hierarchy of needs
Needs composing the hierarchy of needs; means that they have a striving or motivational character.
Conative needs
Most basic need of any person
Psychological needs
Includes physical security, stability, dependency, protection, and freedom from threatening forces.
Safety needs
The desire for friendship, the wish for a mate and children, the need to belong to a family, a club, a neighbourhood, or a nation.
Love and belongingness needs
Includs self-respect, confidence, competence, and the knowledge that others hold them in high esteem.
Esteem needs
Include self-fulfillment, the realization of all one’s potential, and a desire to become creative in the full sense of the word.
Self-actualization needs
Some people in every culture seem to be motivated by the need for beauty and aesthetically pleasing experiences.
Aesthetic needs
People have a desire to know, to solve mysteries, to understand, and to be curious.
Cognitive needs
Perpetuate an unhealthy style of life and have no value in striving for self-actualization; lead only to stagnation and pathology; nonproductive
Neurotic needs
The absense of values, the lack of fulfillment, and the loss of meaning in life.
Metapathology
Some human needs are innately determined even though they can be motivated by learning.
Instinctoid needs
Indicators of psychological health and are opposed to deficiency needs.
B-values
Characterized by expressive rather than coping behavior and is associated with the B-values.
