8 Dimensions as a Framework for Viewing each Theorist's Concept of Humanity Flashcards
What are the 8 dimensions?
Freedom vs Determinism
Rationality vs Irrationality
Nature vs Nurture
Past vs Present
Uniqueness and Universality
Proactive vs Reactive
Homeostasis/Passive vs Heterostasis/Active
Optimism vs Pessimism
Dimension that states that mas has the power of choice; has control over behavior and can understand motives of behavior
Freedom
Dimension that states that behavior is determined by internal or external forces over which the individual has very little or no control.
Determinism
Dimension that states that man is rational and behavior is largely governed by cognitive processes.
Rationality
Dimension which states that behavior is influenced by irrational forces (libido).
Irrationality
Dimension which states that heredity and inborn characteristics are most important determinants of personality.
Nature
Dimension which states that factors in the environment have the most influence on human development.
Nurture/Environment
Dimension which states that early childhood experiences determine one’s personality; personality formation is fixed during 5 years old.
Past
Dimension which states that personality development is independent from the past; early years of experience are significant but not permanent.
Present
Dimension which states that each individual is different from others and incomparable.
Uniqueness
Dimension which states that human behaviours are similar culturally.
Universality
Dimension which states that humans primarily act on their own initiative; the causes of behaviour are internal; humanists believe that man is motivated by personal growth toward self-actualization.
Proactive
Dimension which states that humans only respond to external stimuli; a reaction to the outside force.
Reactive
Dimension which states that the major motivation of behaviour is tension-reduction; achieve and maintain internal equilibrium, commitment, and balance.
Homeostasis/Passive
Dimension which states that man is more than a tension reduction seeking creature; man strives primarily for growth, personal fulfillment, and higher levels of development.
Heterostasis/Active
