1st Act of repeals … church restored to its state of 1547
Edwardian relig legislation was repealed but the legal status of the CHURCH OF ENG was upheld
Clergy who had married could be deprived of their livings

2nd A of Repeals brings back to RC’ism (1529 state)
Pope julius 3 demanded the church submit to Rome before the dispensations to landowners of ex-church prop could be granted
Pope Julius agreed not to try to claim back church land that had been sold (red opp from MPs and local landowners)
Cardinal Pole was sent to England as legate and a’bishop of cant… to facilitate a change to cath.
Reasserting papal authority
1554 restored heresy laws- made it punishable by death to deny papal supremacy
Act of sup 1555- made the pope leader of the church

Pole tried to introduce new reforms into church + increase no of priests.
Appointed new bishops who were to reside in their dioceses + oversee relig life
Prop each cathedral have a seminary for training priests
Mary’s reign too short to see impact
Catholic Durham and Lancashire embraced reforms, many didnt
1557 pope Paul 4 dismissed pole as papal legate
Solidifying her position
Strong prot minority in London & other parts of the south… some prom prot clergy, including 7 bishops, were deprived of their livings
Reformed prot church of eng had been established by statute law
Foreign prots were ordered to leave the country… around 800 Marian exiles fled after 1554 royal injunctions
1553 Mary goes back to Catholicism… 1555 persection of prots under heresy laws starts. Around 280 prots killed including oxford martyrs (Cranmer, Ridley and Latimer)
Influences on religion
Re-intro weakened infl on humanism… pope Paul banned cath from reading Erasmus
1555 Bonner’s book of Homilies, explained the faith in a straightforward way… all catholic… replaces Cranmer
Some prots happy to use 1552 prayer book + operate w/in existing structure, whilst others such as John Knox, wanted to move in a more radical direction
