A

Passed against land owners and aristocrats who had fought against H in battles of Bos + Stoke
Attainders were when either land or titles are taken away bc of treason
H unwilling to reverse

A

H determined pol to bring back as much land as possible into the hands of the crown
1486 parl passed A of Resumption, recovered for the crown all properties which had been granted away since 1455

A

Private armies kept by noblemen
H did not want this meant they could turn against him
H abolished livery + maintenance to keep a priv army- nob had to seek + receive kings approval

A

Applied to nobility + gentry

A

A position as K’s councillor was a sign of the K’s confidence
Emphasis on loyalty to trusted servants
Two chanc retained pos for long periods…. John Morton (1486-1500) & William Warham (1504-09)

A

When a landowner died and left an heir who was legally still a child, child became the king’s ward
K controlled his wards income + when the child became of age to control own lands, H would take a large entry fine

Great Council

A

Meetings of noblemen, called together by the King to discuss high matters of state, usually in moments of emergency when calling of parliament would have taken too long.
Useful form of control for the King, way of gaining support + agreement of his most important for potentially controversial pol for ex 1488 auth a subsidy for campaign in Brittany or 1496 grant a loan of £120,000 for war in Scot…. 5 meetings in reign

Bonds and Recognisances

A

Bonds- written agreeements in which ppl prom to pay a sum of money if they failed to carry out their proms
Recognisances- formal acknowledgment of a dept or an obligation tat alr existed w/ the understanding to pay money if obligation was not met
For ex Thomas Grey in 1492 was req to transfer all his land excl 2 manors to trustees, give rec of £1000 + find others who wld give recs worth £10k on his behalf… 1499 proved loyalty B+R cancelled

Feudal Dues

A

Wardship- K took cont of estates of minors until became of age, meantime take profs
Marriage- K could prof from the arranged marriages of heirs + heiresses… Duchess of Buckingham fined £7000 married w/out licence
Livery- K was paid in order for someone to recover land from Wardship
Relief- K received money as land was inherited, form of inheritance tax
Escheats- payments made when land rev to crown
