Somerset’s 1547 policy

A

New treason act allowed relig issues to be discussed and removed censorship. Prot material could be brought into Eng legally for the first time.
Removal of altars and reforms to church services, combining Lutheran and Calvinist elements
Act in 1545 to dissolve chantries to secure their wealth… subsequent act was passed in 1547 to end the practice of masses fir the sounds of the dead
Spate of iconoclasm in London, leading to widespread destruction ; injunctions of 1538 against pilgrimages and other trad cath practices REISSUED

Translated the trad services into eng to enhance understanding of key texts… was ambitious in relation to Eucharist (communion) using wording which might still allow the cath belief in transubstantiation

Why did relig reform become more radical under N’land?

A

Cranmer was becoming increasingly more rad (as seen by BCP 1552)
More radical sr clergy (e.g Nicholas Ridley, B of London, and John Hooper B of Gloucester)was becoming more influential
Eminent continental reformers had moved to England and were infl dec on relig matters
Eds infl on pol making was incr… a committed prot, the K saw it as his mission to destroy idolatry.

Book of Common Prayer 1552

A

Replacing 1549… accompanied by A of Uniformity
Removed remaining ‘conservative’ ceremonies
Gave Protestant form to the baptism, confirmation, burial and communion services (removing ambiguity of 1549 prayer book)
Banned traditional vestments into simpler replacements
Restricted church music

N’land + John Hooper

A

N’land patronised Bishop John Hooper and the reforms of 1552 and 1553 suggested that the more rad prot movement = gaining ground… Ed’s death= destroyed both contending groups

Humanism + other influences

A

Contest between 2 reforming traditions: traditional Christian humanism… more rad approach to Protestantism (inspired by by Calvinist teachings) both sides published w/ printing press
Gardiner came from trad Christian humanism… influences seen in much of cranmer’s work… although at times his thinking could be more radical
Cecil enc humanist scholars at Cambridge and the humanist-infl Martyr and Bucer were invited to work in Eng
Hugh Latimer, court preacher 1547-50, wanted a complete change in the relig doctrine & thinking
