What does Zaretsky believe?
Family performs an ideological function by offering a haven of the exploitative world of capitalism, but it’s all an illusion
-The nuclear family acts as a prop to hold up capitalism by producing the next generation of obedient workers

Critics of Zaretsky?
Only looks at the nuclear family, ignoring diversity
Althusser belief?
The ruling class used the nuclear family as an ideological state apparatus to transmit obedience and hard work

-Armchair so lacks evidence
-Are family’s really influenced by elite behaviour
-Ignores meanings that assign to their own actions, individual interpretation of the norms and values
