Trends in marriage?

A

-Asian household are 3x less likely to be cohabiting and have high rates of marriage
-Asian household have half the rate of lone person household compared to white households
-Black and mixed households have twice the rate of lone parent households
-Black, Asian and mixed households have incredibly low levels of pensioner couple households compared to white households and much higher rates of other households (multigenerational)

‘Modern individualism’ (lack of customs and duty. More based on choice and quality of relationship)
-Low marriage rates
-High rate of lone parenthood, higher amongst caribbean women than any other ethnic groups
-Separation and divorce 2x as high for white people
-Mixed partisanship common (half black men with partners, live with white women)
-Very few Caribbean mean and women are married to each other
-High rates of black unemployed and reluctant to support a family
-Only 1/4 of black children live with 2 black parents

-Extended family relationships more common in groups from pakistan, Bangladeshi and India
-Extended families still patriarchal structures
-Seniority to eldest male

Old fashioned values (commitment to marriage, tight knit families, birth within marriage, respect for parents, arranged marriages, husbands authority over wife, large number of children, women as housewives)
Similar to 1950s white British culture
-3/4 Pakistani and Bangladeshi women married by 25
-Divorce rates low due to social disapproval and strong family support networks

Therefore its wrong to generalise Afro Caribbean culture
